Culminating weeks of Sinulog events, the Grand Parade is a day-long riot of choreographed street dancing and loud music in downtown Cebu City. Dance groups of grade-school and high school students come from all over the Visayas (central Philippines) to participate. Following months of fundraising for costumes and endless practice of dance steps, their reward is 8 hours of marching and dancing under hot sunny skies along a 5 mile-long route lined with hundreds of thousands of cheering spectators. These young dancers were visibly exhausted by the end of the arduous day (many collapsed and had to be carried to aid stations), but they gave us a fabulous show. Chris Pforr sez: "This is just about my favorite event in the whole world."
My friend and former Java teacher Gary Forbes got me a press pass, so I was able to spend the day out in the middle of the parade taking these pictures.
